Block paving is one of the most popular choices for driveways, patios, pathways, town centres and even road surfacing projects across the country.

Resin bound surfacing is a relatively new paving option, which has been growing its popularity year on year. So when it comes to a resin driveway cost vs. block paving, which one you should choose and which one is cheaper?

At Moli, we can help you work out the exact cost for your resin drive, path or patio. By clicking here you can access our free online quotation builder to work out just how much it will cost for your perfect resin bound surface.

What’s more expensive resin or block paving?

One of the reasons resin installations are popular is because resin provides much better consistency in its pricing, whereas block paving prices can vary dramatically.

Over the long term, resin surfaces work out cheaper as they require minimal maintenance in comparison to high-maintenance block paving. Block paving needs regular weeding, re-sanding and jet washing to keep it looking neat and clean.

What is the cost of a resin driveway per m2?

When considering a resin bound installation, it is essential to understand that the cost can vary based on several factors. Variables include the size of the driveway, how detailed the installation is going to be and whether further landscaping work is required.

At Moli, our prices range between £100 – £165 per square metre. Whether you choose a Moli Makeover or a Moli Transformation will impact the price.

Moli Makeover

A Moli Makeover is the most cost-effective way to get a resin drive. You’d be looking between £100 – £125 per square metre.

Moli Makeover requires a solid base such as tarmac or concrete. We cut back the edges and overlay the existing surface with a crack-reduction membrane. Then aggregates and resin will be blended and laid at a depth of 18-20mm, leaving you the perfect surface.

While it doesn’t have quite the same porosity as our Transformation option, it does give you the perfect Moli finish to the surface.

Moli Transformation

A Moli Transformation is the complete package. The cost would range from £130 – £165 per square metre. The space is dug to a depth of 200-300mm and fill this with a clean porous MOT type 3 and compact this into place. Then a solid base of porous concrete or open-grade tarmac (depending on availability within your area) is installed. Finally, the aggregates and resin will be blended and laid at 18-20mm depth, leaving you with the perfect porose surface.

No matter which option you choose you will still be guaranteed a high-quality, low-maintenance surface that will last for years to come.

What is the cost of block paving per m2?

Block paving is a popular and elegant option for driveways and patios, thanks to its durability and visual appeal. However, it is critical to evaluate the cost before beginning your project, as prices can vary greatly depending on numerous variable.

Block paving costs vary depending on the type of block used, the size of the area to be covered, and the time of year chosen for installation. For example, if you lay block paving during the off-peak season, the cost can start as low as £90 per square metre. However, if you want premium block paving materials, the cost can easily reach £120 per square metre or higher.

To obtain an exact quotation tailored to your individual needs, we recommend speaking to a professional block paving installer and having them come to visit your project.

Which is cheaper?

Block paving driveways are very similar in price if not slightly more expensive than a resin bound driveway. However, as always it depends on multiple factors that are almost impossible to assess without seeing the area of installation.

Overall, resin bound is slightly cheaper per square metre, it also has fewer ongoing maintenance costs and therefore is becoming the go-to option for homeowners when choosing the perfect surfacing material for their driveway.

Which is better block paving or resin bound?

When it comes to resin bound, the cost isn’t the only benefit resin surface can offer to homeowners. Here are five more reasons to consider a resin driveway over block paving.

1.     SUDS compliant surfaces

Permeable block paving has been around the block for some time now, however, there are a few things to take into consideration when choosing it. For example, troublesome drainage issues related to incorrect block paving installation or joints getting blocked by detritus, leading to puddles on the surface.

If you want to avoid these issues, then SUDS compliant permeable resin surfacing holds the solution. Short for Sustainable Urban Drainage System, surfaces that comply with SUDS standards are absorbent and allow water to naturally drain straight through the surface and the sub-base.

Provided that, quality resin driveways like ours tick all the boxes for those seeking environmentally friendly eco paving and sustainable drainage systems that last and help with reducing flood risks.

2.     Wide range of resin colours

Although block paving is often chosen for its wide range of design possibilities, it requires at least two coats of brick paving sealant to protect it from UV colour fading. If the sealant isn’t applied, the loss of colour can occur in as little as five years. Furthermore, UV sealant for block paving needs to be reapplied around every two years to adequately retain its colour.

UV colour stable resin bound eliminates all of these issues, whilst providing homeowners with a much wider choice of resin colours to create a resin driveway, walkway or patio that is unique to their property.

Combined with our Lifetime Colour Lock Guarantee, you can put your absolute trust in our resin bound gravel installations that they will look their very best for years to come.

3.     Best non slip driveway

Block paving can become incredibly slippery when wet, especially if it has moss growing across it. Resin outdoor flooring has excellent anti slip qualities all year round, so protecting your family from dangerous slips at home is easy with our resin surfaces.

Moli resin driveways have an extra anti-skid layer of crushed glass added which delivers slip resistance well above current requirements.

Considering the latest workplace safety, statistics show that 37% of all reported workplace injuries were as a result of a slip, trip or fall. It’s not hard to see why the popularity of resin bound surfaces is steadily increasing in a variety of workplaces as one of the safest surfacing options around.

4.     Weed resistant driveway surface

One of the biggest drawbacks people face with block paving is the eventual return of weeds. Moss, algae and dandelion are just a few culprits that stand out on the block paving and make it look hideous. Rather than enjoying your new paving you will be forever fighting these pesky plants to ensure a nice and clean surface.

With resin bound you can forget about constant de-weeding. Thanks to the way resin bounds aggregates, there aren’t any weeds growing through resin drives.

Resin outdoor flooring is extremely low maintenance. To look nice and tidy all year round, a resin drive requires only light sweeping and jet washing.

5.     Quick and easy resin installation

On average block paving takes around 5-7 working days to install, whereas a resin driveway can be ready to use in as little as 24 hours of it being laid. So, you could install five resin driveways in the same time it takes to install one paved driveway.
