Many homeowners consider resin bound driveways because of the curb appeal they can add to a property. But like all driveway options on the market, they come with pros and cons.

With so many choices available, let’s look at what resin bound systems offer and what you should consider before investing.

What is a resin bound driveway?

Resin bound driveways are created by combining natural aggregates with a clear resin binder. The combined mixture is carefully hand-trowelled, resulting in a porous, seamless surface that allows water to drain through at a rate of 850 litres per minute.

Unlike traditional surfaces, resin bound driveways are flexible and resistant to cracking, especially when installed at an appropriate depth of 18-20mm.

Pros of resin driveways

Affordability

A resin bound driveway may not seem like the cheapest option at first, but it offers long-term value due to its durability and minimal maintenance requirements. When considering a resin driveway’s lifespan, the investment can be more economical than block paved driveways or other alternatives.

This detailed post looks at resin driveway cost.

Non-slip surface

One of the standout qualities of resin bound surfaces is their natural non-slip texture. Fine recycled glass particles are scattered across the finished surface to create a grip-like feel underfoot.

This non-slip feature makes them safer for wet conditions making resin bound surfacing the perfect application for surfaces including:

  • Hospital entrances and paths
  • School playgrounds
  • Driveways
  • Swimming pool surrounds
  • Disability entrance ramps
  • Sports courts and arenas

Durability

Resin driveways are resilient, lasting up to 20-25 years with proper care. Compared to options like tarmac or gravel which would only last 15 years.

Resin bound surfaces also resist cracking and surface degradation, making them an ideal long-term investment.

Speed of installation

A key advantage of resin bound systems is the speed of installation.

A standard residential driveway of around 40 square meters can typically be laid within a day, with an additional 24-48 hours required for curing. This quick turnaround minimises disruption and allows you to enjoy the finished surface sooner.

Resin bound driveways look great

Resin bound driveways provide a seamless, contemporary finish that stands out from other driveway materials. The colour options and natural texture can enhance curb appeal and may even increase property value thanks to its water drainage, safety and ability to stop weed growth.

Your home value could also increase in neighbourhoods where paving slabs, tarmac and gravel driveways dominate.

Low maintenance option

Thanks to its weed-resistant surface, a resin bound driveway requires very little upkeep. With no loose stones, occasional sweeping and a light power wash will keep it looking new.

If the natural aggregate colour is affected in any way a resin kit can be mixed with 500ml of Xylene and roller coated lightly over the surface to rejuvenate the colour of your driveway.

Although this is highly unlikely it is sometimes an option homeowners choose.

Permeable driveway option

Resin bound surfaces are fully permeable, allowing rainwater to drain minimising pooling or puddling. The small gaps between the aggregates allow for the water to rapidly drain making resin ideal for preventing water build-up.

The use of drainage systems is unnecessary if resin bound is installed alongside a permeable base that meets Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) requirements.

SUDS compliant for new builds

SUDS stands for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems. A new build with a resin bound driveway must follow SUDS requirements and permeability is only guaranteed when the driveway is a full, new installation with a properly prepared permeable base.

Some contractors may offer to overlay existing concrete surfaces for a quick fix at a lower cost, but this doesn’t achieve true permeability and won’t be SUDS compliant.

At Moli, the overlay option is called a Moli Makeover. It’s an affordable solution for properties with a solid base already in place. While it doesn’t provide the same level of drainage as a new install, it’s a great budget-friendly option for customers who don’t require full permeability or those who have additional drainage options already in place.

Permeable resin reduces the heat effect

Because the ground beneath resin driveways can breathe, they tend to remain cooler than solid asphalt in warm weather, contributing to a more comfortable outdoor environment. This also means that water cannot sit beneath the surface and then freeze during the winter months leading to cracking.

Natural and sustainable materials

Resin is created from natural and recycled materials, making it an eco-friendly, sustainable option. A Moli surface is produced from naturally sourced aggregates, highlighting their positive environmental impact.

Cons of resin driveways

Needs to be installed at the right depth

Correct depth is critical to ensure the surface won’t crack or degrade prematurely. Moli goes one step further than other companies to prevent this from happening. Moli resin bound is installed at 20mm depth compared to 18mm for long-lasting resilience.

Be cautious of installers who might cut corners on this.

Resin drives are known to fade

In the past resin drives have been known to fade. While UV-stable resins have reduced fading, exposure to sunlight can still cause some discolouration over time.

Moli uses the highest-grade UV-stable materials in partnership with one-of-a-kind washed and dried aggregates to counteract discolouration. The option of roller coating should you experience any sort of colour loss is also available.

It is also worth noting that no outdoor surface is entirely immune to fading and although measures can be put in place to counter it, it is impossible to eliminate it.

Moss, mold & weed growth

While generally resistant, resin surfaces can still see moss or weeds at the edges or in areas with trapped moisture although not nearly as severe as block paving. Regular sweeping and occasional treatment can prevent significant growth.

Not suitable for heavy traffic

Resin bound surfaces are excellent for residential driveways with typical vehicle loads. However, they may not be the best choice for areas with heavy trucks or frequent turning movements, as these conditions can accelerate wear. You can discuss any concerns with Moli before installation.

Importance of a quality installer

Resin driveway installations aren’t regulated, making it crucial to choose an experienced, reputable installer. You may have heard the term ‘cowboys’ when hearing horror stories of workmen taking advantage of homeowners.

Taking the extra bit of time to research your installer or speaking to people with experience is essential when committing to any work done on your home. Precise mixing, the right installation conditions, and proper application are just a few essentials required for a successful installation.

At Moli, we pride ourselves on adhering to a set of standards to ensure a driveway that will last its 25-year lifetime.
